Do I really need to ‘gel’ with my wedding photographer?

A wedding photographer’s job is to show up with professional gear and take high quality images. Maybe direct you a little bit, make sure you look your best, shout at your guests to arrange the group shots. Right?

I don’t think so. When I’m talking to you about shooting your wedding, I’ll always stress that our job is to put you at ease on the day. Sure, we take enormous pride in our work and won’t settle for less than incredible images, but that should be a given. In fact, I believe that a fundamental part of creating those images lies within the quality of the moments themselves, and a technically brilliant photograph will do little to hide the fact that you’re not having a good time! You’ll share a lot of time and space with your photographer on the day, and that means the relationship (or lack thereof!) can make or break your wedding day experience. In order to really enjoy it, you need to be relaxed and comfortable.

I am immensely proud of the fact that the most common feedback we receive at Furness Digital Photography relates to our manner on the day and our commitment to making your day run smoothly. I often joke with our brides that a wedding day can be as manic as it is magical, so the last thing you need is added stress from your photographers!

So if you’re on the hunt for a wedding photographer, keep in mind that you need to like the art and the artist. It can be as simple as a smooth booking process and great communication, or an authentic, genuine focus on what’s really important to you and the vision you have for your special day; those little things, those critical details really can make all of the difference. Of course you need to love the style of work, but is there a demonstrable commitment to accommodating your plans, or do they expect you to fit in with theirs? Are they looking for what makes your wedding your wedding, or do you feel like just another booking? For me, taking pictures is just part of the job. The rest is born of passion, and an appreciation for the privilege- because that’s what it is- to be trusted to play our part on one of the most important days of your life. So I wish you all the best in your photographer search. Take your time, have conversations, enjoy the process. And if you're still looking for someone who fits the bill, you know where to find us!
